Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition party ODM, Wednesday, September 11, appointed Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o to head the ODM Central Committee. This move comes as Odinga steps up his campaign to become the next chair of the African Union Commission (AUC).
The announcement was made by ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna on Wednesday after a Central Committee meeting chaired by Odinga himself. Sifuna explained that due to Odinga’s busy campaign schedule, Governor Nyong’o would chair any Central Committee meetings in Odinga’s absence.
Odinga’s campaign for the AUC chairmanship was officially launched by Kenya on August 27, 2024, at State House, Nairobi. The event, attended by several African leaders and dignitaries, signaled broad support for his candidacy. Odinga has also gained backing from several East African Community (EAC) countries, including Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, and South Sudan.
The election for the AUC chair is scheduled to take place at the 38th AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in February 2025. The AU Assembly will elect the new chairperson through a secret ballot. The winner will replace Moussa Faki, whose term ends next year, and will serve a four-year term with the possibility of renewal.
