So far, heavy police present in Nairobi streets reported by local media. Tear gas reported to have been lobed at protestors in Kibra a Nairobi slum.
Some on social media are blaming the police for the violence. There’s warnings that the government would infiltrate the peaceful demonstrations with thugs who’d cause violence to discredit the movement.
One person has reportedly been shot.
Schools and major businesses close for business on Monday. Among them Kenya Airways, closes for business in Kisumu and Johannesburg offices.
One person has just been shot near Toi Market. Traders are screaming that he is a mechanic, not a protester. They say it's a police officer with a rank who fired (@FerdyOmondi)https://t.co/L4JIGmqtY9#Maandamano #DateWithDestiny20thMarch #Nairobi pic.twitter.com/9SpCHlFBXb

Schools have also closed. Newton Khamasi, a Ruto supporter, has posted a letter on his Twitter account supposedly from his child’s school informing parents and guardians of school closure on March 20.
Azimio leader Raila Odinga, who called the protests, declared March 20 a national holiday and told supporters to wear white or carry a white handkerchief to symbolize they’re engaging in peaceful protests.
President William Ruto criticized Odinga and said he does not believe he’s planning a peaceful protest and asked why Odinga was “terrorizing” the country.

The protests led by opposition leader, and Commander In Chief of The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Julius Malema dubbed Now Or Never, has attracted thousands to the streets of various cities in South Africa.
“Young people in Mangaung have taken it to the streets to say enough is enough, in a peaceful demonstration. Since Ramaphosa took office the number of unemployed people has increased from 8.2 million to more than 11 million. It’s Now Or Never!! #NationalShutdown
Comments from Social Media
“Biggest flop is a party having to feel like they have to resort to this in order to get basic service delivery for the people – biggest flop is having enough resources to fight a shutdown but not enough resources to do the same to make this country safe,” Amanda Thabethe responding to South African ANC General Secretary calling Malema-driven protests dubbed #NationalShutdown a flop.
