Four Inmates Break Out of Jail in USA
Four inmates, including a man accused of murder, escaped from a central Georgia jail early Monday morning, leaving authorities scrambling to track them down.
The inmates escaped from the Bibb County Detention Center in Macon, about 84 miles southeast of Atlanta, around 3 a.m. Monday, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
The four climbed through a broken dayroom window and through a cut fence, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff David Davis told reporters someone driving a blue Dodge Challenger in the parking lot near the fence appeared to aid the escape.
The FBI is now working with local law enforcement and the US Marshals Service to track down the four inmates.
One of the escapees is Joey Fournier, 52, who is accused of murder. The others are Marc Kerry Anderson, 24, accused of aggravated assault, and Chavis Demaryo Stokes, 29, accused of possession of a firearm and drug trafficking.
The fourth escapee, Johnifer Dernard Barnwell, 37, was detained for the US Marshals after being convicted on federal charges related to the “armed distribution of large quantities of drugs.”
The sheriff’s office is asking for the public’s help in locating the four men. Rewards totaling $73,000 have been offered for information leading to the inmates’ capture.
Niger: Ousted President Attempts to Escape From Custody
The military government in Niger Friday October 20 said it foiled an attempt by the ousted former President, Mohamed Bazoum, to escape from custody.
Bazoum was overthrown in a coup on 26 July and has been under house arrest ever since. On Thursday night, he attempted to flee with his family, cooks and security, according to the Niger military statement.
The group had planned to fly out on helicopters but the plan was foiled, the statement added. Bazoum’s lawyers said they have not been able to contact him since the attempted escape and fear for his safety.
The international community has condemned the coup and called for Mr Bazoum’s release. However, the junta has so far refused to comply.
Bazoum’s family and lawyers have been demanding proof that he is still alive and that he is being treated humanely. They have also called for his immediate release.
Bazoum has refused to officially resign.
Mozambique Burns 45,000 Hens in Fight Against Bird Flu
In a desperate battle to contain the spread of bird flu, the Mozambican government on Friday, October 20, incinerated over 45,000 hens suspected to have been in contact with the virus. The birds were slaughtered, burned, and buried in the southern district of Morrumbene, the epicenter of the outbreak.
The outbreak, which has already forced poultry farmers in neighboring South Africa to kill seven million egg-laying hens, has spread to Mozambique’s Inhambane province, raising fears that it could soon engulf the entire country.
In a bid to halt the virus’s relentless march, the Mozambican government has banned the importation of chickens and their derivatives from South Africa, including eggs and chicken feed. The government has also stopped the circulation of chickens, eggs, and animal feed from Morrumbene to other parts of Mozambique.
The bird flu outbreak has had a devastating impact on Mozambique’s poultry industry, causing a shortage of eggs and chickens, and a sharp rise in prices. In the capital city of Maputo, the average price of chicken has nearly doubled.
The outbreak has also had a ripple effect on the country’s economy, as poultry is a major source of protein for many Mozambicans.
