Popular comedian Michael Usi was sworn in as Malawi’s new vice president on Friday, following the tragic plane crash earlier this month that claimed the life of his predecessor, Saulos Chilima.
The 55-year-old Usi, known by his stage persona “Manganya,” received a mixed response to his appointment. While some celebrated his rise from entertainer to national leader, others questioned his experience for such a high-profile role.
Usi’s background is undeniably unique. A mainstay on Malawian radio and television for over two decades, he balanced his acting career with a successful stint as a hospital clinician. This experience with healthcare disparities fueled his passion for social development, leading him to a lengthy career with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA).
Despite his demanding work with ADRA, Usi never abandoned his artistic side. He continued acting, primarily in Chichewa-language productions. His comedic talent was so renowned that when he launched a political movement, many dismissed it as a prank.
Usi’s political ambitions, however, proved genuine. His movement, “Odya zake alibe Mulandu” (loosely translated as “be free and honest”), later became part of the UTM party led by Chilima. Their eloquence and charisma drew large crowds during the 2019 elections, ultimately leading to Chilima choosing Usi as his running mate.
