Lion Kills Longtime Caretaker at Nigerian University
A devastating tragedy struck Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Nigeria on Monday, as zookeeper Olabode Olawuyi was fatally mauled by one of the lions he had cared for since their birth nearly a decade ago.
Mr. Olawuyi, a respected veterinary technologist, was attacked while feeding the lions in their den. Despite efforts from colleagues, the injuries inflicted were fatal. The university confirmed that the lion involved has been euthanized.
The incident sent shockwaves through the university and beyond. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss,” said university vice-chancellor Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, ordering a full investigation. “Mr. Olawuyi was a dedicated member of our staff, who devoted himself to the care of the animals.”
Social media erupted with tributes to Mr. Olawuyi, with many sharing fond memories of his gentle nature and expertise. However, some graphic images of the attack were also circulated, prompting authorities to urge restraint.
The cause of the attack remains unclear. While student union leader Abbas Akinremi attributed it to “human error,” others, like veteran lion feeder Abba Gandu from Kano, emphasized the importance of robust safety protocols. Mr. Gandu, who has over 50 years of experience, highlighted the inherent dangers of working with wild animals and called for stricter measures to prevent similar tragedies.
Pope Francis Urges End to Sudan’s Conflict
In a passionate plea for peace, Pope Francis on Sunday implored Sudan’s warring factions to lay down their arms and end a 10-month conflict that has displaced millions and pushed the country to the brink of famine.
Speaking during his traditional Angelus address, the Pope stressed the need of ending the bloodshed, saying, “I ask again the warring parties to stop this war, which causes so much damage to the people and the future of the country.”
His call came amidst a devastating humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where renewed clashes between the military and rebel groups have displaced an estimated 2.5 million people and left millions more facing severe food insecurity. The United Nations has warned of a potential famine if fighting continues.
The country gained independence in 1956 but was soon plunged into a decades-long civil war between the north and the south. In 2011, South Sudan gained independence, but violence has continued to plague various regions across the country.
This latest conflict erupted in October 2023 following a military coup that ousted a transitional government formed after the overthrow of long-time dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019. The military takeover sparked nationwide protests and armed resistance from rebel groups, plunging the country back into violence.
Despite international efforts to mediate a ceasefire and a return to civilian rule, diplomatic attempts have so far proven unsuccessful. The international community, including the United Nations and regional bodies, have repeatedly condemned the violence and urged all parties to prioritize peace.
