Burkina Faso has expelled three French diplomats, accusing them of “subversive activities,” according to a notice delivered to the French embassy on April 16. The nature of the alleged activities remains undisclosed.
The expelled diplomats, including two political advisors, were given 48 hours to leave the country. This latest move further strains relations between Burkina Faso and its former colonizer, France.
The tensions began in September 2022 when a military coup led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré ousted the previous government. Since then, the junta has distanced itself from France, Burkina Faso’s traditional ally.
Captain Traoré has pursued closer ties with Russia, a move seen as a rejection of France’s historical influence in the region. This shift has resulted in the expulsion of several French diplomats and the closure of a French military base in Burkina Faso.
The expulsion of the three diplomats is the latest development in a deteriorating relationship between Burkina Faso and France. It remains to be seen how this incident will further impact their already strained ties.
