Several African nations have called for Israel to adopt a cautious approach as it convenes its highest security body to determine the course of action following a severe aerial onslaught by Iran on Saturday night.
This response by Iran, which involved over 300 drones and missiles targeting Israel, was purportedly in retaliation for an Israeli strike on its embassy in Damascus on April 1st, which claimed the lives of several Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps officers. Despite the scale of the attack, Israeli defense forces successfully neutralized most of the offensive weapons.
Countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Somalia have emphasized the need for restraint to avert further escalation of the conflict.
South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation stated on the social media platform X, “We urge all parties involved to exercise the utmost restraint and refrain from any actions that could further escalate tensions in this already delicate region.”
Echoing this sentiment, Kenyan President William Ruto advised Israel, “to demonstrate utmost restraint considering the urgent necessity for all involved to step back from the brink, beyond which recovery could be tremendously difficult.” He further described the Iranian assault as “a clear and immediate danger to international peace and security.”
Somalia has implored “the international community to take swift and decisive action to de-escalate the situation and mitigate the risk of further conflict.”
The Nigerian Foreign Ministry appealed to both nations involved, stating, “We call on Israel and Iran to reflect on their commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts as embraced universally.”
