At least 48 people lost their lives Sunday, September 8, when a fuel tanker collided with another truck in Nigeria, sparking a deadly explosion, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency reported.
The accident occurred in the Agaie area of north-central Niger State. The fuel tanker, which was also transporting cattle, caught fire after the crash. Abdullahi Baba-Arab, the director-general of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed that at least 50 cattle were burned alive in the incident.
Initial reports stated that 30 bodies were recovered, but later, Baba-Arab announced that another 18 victims were found burned to death, bringing the total number of fatalities to 48. The bodies were given a mass burial. The number of people injured in the collision remains unclear.
Emergency teams launched search-and-rescue operations at the scene to look for any survivors and assess the extent of the damage.
Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago urged local residents to stay calm and called on all road users to exercise caution and follow traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies.
