Nyamira County, once a quiet player in local politics, found itself in the spotlight on Thursday when the County Assembly voted to impeach Speaker Enock Okero. The decision came after weeks of internal strife and power struggles that have paralyzed the county’s leadership.
Twenty-one Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted to oust Okero, citing a breakdown in trust and governance. For weeks, Okero had been at the center of a heated political storm, with allegations of undermining crucial motions in the assembly — most notably, those aimed at scrutinizing Governor Amos Nyaribo’s administration. His impeachment marked a dramatic conclusion to a standoff period characterized by behind-the-scenes maneuvering and public confrontations.
Okero’s leadership has long been a source of tension within the assembly. Even before his two-week suspension, murmurs of discontent had begun to surface, particularly among those who believed he was obstructing the MCAs’ ability to hold the county’s executive accountable. The tipping point came when several motions, including one that sought to investigate Governor Nyaribo’s governance, appeared to stall under Okero’s watch. His critics accused him of deliberately slowing down the assembly’s work in order to protect the governor.
The situation reached a boiling point when Okero was dramatically removed from his office after a confrontation with MCAs. In a highly publicized standoff, the speaker was physically escorted out of his chambers, a move that highlighted the growing divisions within the assembly. Following this incident, Okero was suspended, and Ekerenyo MCA Thaddeus Nyabaro was appointed as the acting speaker to temporarily manage the assembly’s affairs.
