Just two months after its deployment, the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti, led by the Kenya Police Contingent, has achieved significant milestones in restoring peace and stability to the troubled nation.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the contingent has made substantial progress in stabilizing key areas of Port-au-Prince, working in close cooperation with the Haiti National Police and local communities. A key achievement has been the resolution of critical threats to public safety and security, including the pacification of gang-controlled areas and the reopening of vital infrastructure such as the airport and key roads. This has enabled the return of thousands of displaced Haitians to their homes.
The NPS has also confirmed that its officers deployed to Haiti are receiving regular salaries and allowances, ensuring their well-being throughout the mission. The Force Commander, Mr. Godfrey Otunge, SAIG, and his team have been commended for their dedication and patriotism.
Kenya’s leadership of the MSS mission is a testament to its commitment to international peacekeeping. Last year, the country stepped up to lead the long-awaited international force to assist Haiti in combating its escalating insecurity. The UN-approved mission, with an initial duration of one year, will total 2,500 personnel from various countries.
The violence in Haiti has had devastating consequences for the population, affecting food security, humanitarian aid access, and basic human rights. The MSS mission aims to address these challenges and create a more secure environment for the Haitian people.
