Jamaican dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel was released from prison Wednesday after serving a 13-year sentence for murder. The 48-year-old, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was convicted in 2014 along with three others for the killing of Clive “Lizard” Williams in 2011.
However, a significant turn of events unfolded in March when Jamaica’s highest court, the Privy Council, overturned the convictions due to juror misconduct. The case was then returned to the Jamaican Court of Appeal to determine if a new trial was warranted.
In a decision delivered Wednesday, the Court of Appeal ruled that a new trial was unnecessary, ordering Kartel’s immediate release. Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop stated, “We conclude that the interests of justice do not require a new trial.”
Known for his infectious rhythms and provocative lyrics, Kartel achieved immense popularity both locally and internationally, collaborating with A-list artists such as Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Eminem. His influence extended beyond music, with ventures into the spirits, fashion, and condom industries.
The trial that led to his conviction was a high-profile event, capturing the nation’s attention. Heavy security measures were in place throughout the proceedings, reflecting the significant public interest in the case.
Kartel’s release is expected to be met with mixed reactions, given the gravity of the original charges. His supporters have long maintained his innocence, while others have expressed concerns about the potential implications of the decision.
The dancehall icon is reportedly in poor health, a factor that may have influenced the court’s decision. His legal team has not yet commented on his immediate plans following his release.
