Kenya has expressed strong support for Haiti’s newly sworn-in Transitional Presidential Council (TPC), vowing to assist the Caribbean nation in its fight against gang violence and its journey towards political stability.
President William Ruto lauded the establishment of the TPC, calling it a critical step in Haiti’s political transition. He emphasized the council’s vital role in restoring key state institutions and law and order, as outlined in the April 12th decree.
Kenya, along with other African nations and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), has pledged its commitment to Haiti’s future. President Ruto reiterated Kenya’s willingness to contribute to the UN Security Council-approved security mission envisioned by Resolution 2699 (2023). This includes the deployment of 1,000 Kenyan police officers to train and support Haitian police in restoring order and protecting vital infrastructure.
The nine-member TPC officially assumed power on Thursday, marking the end of former Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s term. Michel Patrick Boisvert, Henry’s former finance minister, will serve as interim Prime Minister until the council forms a new government, establishes a provisional electoral council, and prepares for elections in 2026. The last Haitian elections were held in November 2016.
This move comes after an agreement signed in March between Kenya and Haiti, facilitating Nairobi’s involvement in the international security effort. The agreement, witnessed by President Ruto and then-Prime Minister Henry, paves the way for the deployment of Kenyan police to Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital.
