11 KU Students Die, Several Injured In Voi Accident
A bus carrying Kenyatta University students and staff was Monday evening involved in a tragic accident in Maungu, Voi, killing 11 students on the spot, and injuring 21 others.
Tuesday morning, the injured, who had been taken to various hospitals in Voi were airlifted to Nairobi facilities to get specialized medical treatment. This move came as part of the efforts to ensure the well-being of those affected. Air ambulances were deployed to the Ikanga airstrip in Voi, to facilitate the transfer of those in critical condition to more equipped medical centers.
Prof. Paul Wainaina, the Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University, visited the Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi on Tuesday to oversee the condition and care of the students and staff involved in the devastating accident.
In addition, the university dispatched a comprehensive response team comprising doctors, medical personnel, security officers, and wellness officers to provide support in Voi. This team was sent to offer immediate assistance and ensure that the needs of the injured and affected are adequately addressed.
The university also announced that the remains of those who died in the accident will be transferred to the Kenyatta University Funeral Home.
Road Carnage Worse Than Covid Pandemic- Kindiki
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki Tuesday called road traffic accidents a national emergency, saying they kill more people than the COVID-19 pandemic did in its peak years.
Speaking at the opening of a new police complex in Kisumu, Kindiki said road accidents claim a staggering 4,000 lives annually, compared to the 4,600 Kenyans who died from COVID-19 between 2020 and 2022.
“This means the problem of road accidents is worse than serious epidemics like Covid-19,” Kindiki said.
He announced plans for an “urgent program” to be developed jointly by the Kenya Police Service Traffic Department and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to tackle the crisis. This program, discussed with Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen, aims to reduce road accident deaths and injuries.
Kindiki condemned corrupt law enforcement officers who take bribes and allow traffic violations to go unpunished. “You are part of this criminal organization that is hurting our people,” he said.
Kindiki’s comments come after a horrific accident involving a Kenyatta University bus that claimed the lives of 11 students and injured 21 others near Voi on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway Monday evening.
