Google Cracks Down on Bulk Email Senders
Google is cracking down on spam and boosting email security with new requirements for bulk senders, effective February 2024. These stricter rules aim to protect Gmail users from unwanted messages, make unsubscribing easier, and enhance email authentication.
Thus, the giant company is setting a hard limit for spam rates. Bulk senders, defined as those sending over 5,000 daily messages, must now keep their spam complaints below a specific threshold. This mandatory enforcement will replace the previous advisory, ensuring less spam slips through the cracks.
In addition, Google will make it easier for Gmail users to unsubscribe from commercial emails by mandating a one-click unsubscribe option for all commercial emails sent to Gmail accounts. This means you can easily ditch unwanted messages with just a single tap, saving you time and frustration.
Moreover, bulk email senders will be required to implement “strong authentication” following Google’s best practices. This requirement closes loopholes used by attackers, making email sources more secure and trustworthy.
“Many bulk senders lack proper security, allowing attackers to exploit them,” said Neil Kumaran, Group Product Manager for Gmail Security and Trust. “These new measures address a crucial aspect of email security: verifying the sender’s identity.”
In recent months, Google added extra verification steps for sensitive actions in Gmail and expanded their “dark web report” feature to alert users if their email addresses have been compromised.
