JKUAT Student Strangled, Decapitated: Autopsy Reveals Gruesome Details
The postmortem examination of slain University student Rita Waeni Muendo has revealed that she was strangled before being decapitated, Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor confirmed Thursday.
The examination, conducted at City Mortuary, Nairobi, also showed bruising on Waeni’s scalp caused by a blunt object and fractures on bones in her neck.
“I can comfortably conclude that the cause of death was strangulation after which she was decapitated and her body dumped,” Dr. Oduor told journalists.
The family of the 23-year-old student had earlier identified the head recovered from a dam in Kiambu County as belonging to Waeni. This allowed pathologists to proceed with the autopsy, which follows an earlier examination of other body parts found in Nairobi.
Detectives investigating the case are now looking into the possibility of a ritualistic motive linked to occultism, which is considered a leading cause of murder in the country.
The dismembered body of Waeni was found in a dustbin at an apartment on TRM Drive, Kasarani, on January 13, 2024. Her head was missing until its discovery at the dam on January 21.
Meanwhile, two Nigerian nationals, William Ovie Opia and JohnBull Asibor, were Monday remanded in custody for eight days while detectives raced against time to unravel the horrific murder and dismemberment of Ms. Waeni.
The suspects, apprehended in a rented flat in Ndenderu, Kiambu County, are suspected of orchestrating the gruesome crime. Authorities recovered a cache of potentially incriminating evidence during their arrest, including a hatchet, butcher knife, six mobile phones, three laptops, and a variety of SIM cards. A Kenyan ID belonging to Omar Mwamkwaju Juma was also found in their possession.
Adding a layer of intrigue, investigations revealed that both Opia and Asibor were likely living in Kenya illegally. Opia’s passport was found to be expired, while Asibor claimed to have lost his passport last year. Opia, according to investigators, offered a curious explanation for the hatchet found in his possession, claiming he bought it online for “self-protection.”
