Ruto Quashes Mt. Kenya Succession Wars
President William Ruto Tuesday fired a warning shot at leaders within his Kenya Kwanza coalition and wider Mt. Kenya region, demanding they end their early jostling for the 2027 succession and focus on delivering promises made to Kenyans.
The President’s stern remarks came during the official opening of the Gilgil Technical and Vocational College in Nakuru County. His intervention follows rising tensions within Mt. Kenya, where factions have begun advocating for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s replacement on the 2027 ticket.
“Let me ask all leaders that we focus our attention on the delivery of the assignment that was given to us by the people of Kenya,” President Ruto declared.
He specifically addressed members of his Kenya Kwanza alliance and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, urging them to “step down any contestations for whatever positions – present or future – so that we can work.”
However, the President went further, offering mentorship to younger leaders in his government but cautioning them against premature ambition. “Rigathi Gachagua and I have a plan, we said that we would give these young leaders mentorship, but they should slow down,” he stated.
“The younger leaders, we are ready to mentor you, but please do not be in a hurry. Relax. We are different, we are not the type to fight younger leaders, but don’t rush us.”
President Ruto’s statement comes against the backdrop of a brewing storm in Mt. Kenya, where sections are pushing for either Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro or Interior CS Prof. Kithure Kindiki to replace Gachagua as running mate.
Prof. Kindiki, however, swiftly distanced himself from the 2027 debate, labeling it “tactless, anti-people, and primitive.” He demanded the topic be dropped or, at least, his name excluded.
“The ongoing debate ought to stop, but if it must proceed, I respectfully request that my name not be dragged in it,” Kindiki wrote on social media.
Deputy President Gachagua has also previously spoken out, stating that his sole focus is assisting President Ruto succeed. “I am focused on one thing; assisting President William Ruto to succeed…hii ingine wengine wanafuata mambo mengine, mimi siko hapo…hata mpige kelele gani,” he said last week.
Red Alert as Mombasa Battles Red Eye Surge
The Mombasa County government has sounded the alarm as cases of Conjunctivitis, commonly known as red eye, climb alarmingly. In a statement issued Monday, the County Department of Health Services urged residents to prioritize hygiene measures to curb the spread of this highly contagious and infectious disease.
“We are seeing a worrying rise in red eye cases,” declared the department, highlighting the urgency of action. “This condition, caused by viruses, bacteria, allergens, or irritants, can cause significant discomfort with symptoms like eye pain, swelling, redness, itchiness, and discharge.”
To combat the outbreak, Mombasa County is advocating for stringent hygiene practices. Frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoiding touching or rubbing eyes and face, and refraining from sharing personal items like towels, pillowcases, eye drops, and makeup are key measures being emphasized.
“These preventive steps are crucial,” the department stressed. “Red eye spreads quickly, and rightfully, it’s causing fear and anxiety among our residents.”
