Nigeria’s Parliament Denies Tinubu $6 Million Yacht
In a move that has been welcomed by many Nigerians, the House of Representatives has rejected a proposal to purchase a $6 million presidential yacht for President Bola Tinubu. The proposal, which was part of a supplementary budget tabled before the House on Thursday, was met with widespread criticism from Nigerians who called it extravagant and unnecessary.
The proposal was particularly controversial given the country’s ongoing economic crisis. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s annual inflation rate surged to 26.72% in September, the highest level in 17 years. Millions of Nigerians are living in poverty, and many are struggling to afford basic necessities such as food and shelter.
Human rights activists slammed the yacht proposal, arguing that it was a waste of money that could be better spent on addressing the needs of the Nigerian people. They also pointed out that the proposal was in contrast to President Tinubu’s campaign promise to reduce extravagant government spending.
In a welcome move, the House of Representatives instead redirected the funds towards increasing the allocation of student loans. This move was widely praised by Nigerians, who saw it as a more worthwhile investment.
President Tinubu’s spokesperson, Temitope Ajayi, defended the yacht proposal, saying that the navy had “operational reasons” for requesting it. However, many Nigerians remain skeptical of this claim, given that the country has a number of more pressing needs, such as improving its healthcare and education systems.
Kenyan Woman Killed in US by Boyfriend
Margaret Mbitu, a 31-year-old Kenyan woman living in Whitman, Massachusetts, was found dead in a white SUV at Boston’s Logan Airport on Wednesday night. She was last seen leaving her workplace, BAMSI, a charitable organization in Brockton, Monday.
BAMSI reported Margaret missing on Monday night after she failed to show up for work or return home from her shift. Police began searching for Margaret and her vehicle, a white Toyota Venza. On Wednesday night, police discovered Margaret’s body in the Venza, which was parked in a garage at Logan Airport.
Police believe that Margaret was killed by her 40-year-old boyfriend, Kevin Kang’ethe, based on evidence found in the vehicle. Kang’ethe is a Kenyan citizen who was living in Lowell, Massachusetts. He is suspected to have fled to Kenya after the murder. Police have obtained a warrant for Kang’ethe’s arrest and are working with Kenyan authorities to locate him.
The motive for the murder is still under investigation. However, police believe that Margaret and Kang’ethe had a history of domestic violence. In 2022, Margaret filed a restraining order against Kang’ethe after he allegedly threatened her.
Margaret’s family and friends described her as a kind, loving, and intelligent woman.
