Harambee Starlets Eliminate Cameroon From WAFCON
The Harambee Starlets, Kenya’s women’s national football team, are flying high in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers. After a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Cameroon in the first round, the Starlets are now set to face Botswana in the second round in November.
The Starlets won the reverse fixture 1-0 courtesy of Cynthia Shilwatso’s 75th-minute strike, but the tie was level on aggregate after Cameroon won the first leg 1-0. This meant that the tie had to be decided by penalties, and the Starlets held their nerve to win 4-3.
Botswana also had a comfortable victory in the first round, beating Gabon 10-1 on aggregate. The Zebras won the first leg 4-1 in Franceville, and then cruised to a 6-0 victory in the second leg.
The Starlets will be confident of their chances against Botswana, but they know that it will be a tough match. The Zebras are a well-organized team with some talented players.
In other news from the WAFCON qualifiers, Cote d’Ivoire will not be part of next year’s finals despite beating Tanzania 2-0 in the first leg. The Ivorians lost to Tanzania in the penalty shootout after the second leg ended in a 2-2 draw.
Tunisia, also known as the Eaglets of Carthage, are one of the teams tipped to make it to Morocco 2024 after annihilating Niger 12-1 on aggregate. Burundi also progressed to the next round after knocking out Ethiopia 5-3 in post-match penalties.
Ghana thrashed Rwanda 12-0 on aggregate to progress, while Guinea made light work of Mauritius in their 11-0 demolition. Togo, Congo, and Namibia also progressed after wins against Djibouti, Guinea Bissau, and the Gambia respectively.
The second round of the WAFCON qualifiers is shaping up to be very exciting, and the Starlets will be hoping to continue their good form and book their place at the finals in Morocco.
UDA Rejects Cherargei’s Proposal To Extend President Ruto’s Term Limit
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party Monday rejected a proposal by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei to extend the presidential term limit to seven years.
UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala said that Cherargei’s views are “personal” and do not reflect the position of the party or its leader, President William Ruto.
“The UDA Party respects and upholds the Senator’s personal views but particularly on the referenced subject, those views do not reflect the perspectives of the UDA Party and/or its Party Leader, H.E. President William Ruto,” Malala said.
Malala said that Ruto is focused on delivering on his campaign promises to Kenyans and is “steadfast on defending the constitution.”
“The Ruling Party is presently focused on delivering on its promises to the People of Kenya, mindful that it shall in due course submit its scorecard for the people to evaluate. In doing so, we are guided by the timeline to the next general election,” Malala said.
Cherargei’s proposal, which he submitted to the National Dialogue Committee last week, would require a referendum to amend the constitution.
The current constitution allows a president to serve two five-year terms. Cherargei argued that extending the term limit to seven years would give the president more time to implement their manifesto.
However, his proposal has been met with criticism from many Kenyans, who argue that it is an attempt to weaken the constitution and give the president too much power.
The Data Protection Commissioner Fines Privacy Offenders
The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) on Tuesday cracked down on three companies that allegedly breached data privacy rights. The companies were fined a total of Sh9.4 million for their offenses.
Roma School in Uthiru was fined the highest penalty of Sh4.55 million for posting a minor’s picture without parental consent. The ODPC said the penalty was intended to send a strong message to schools and other facilities handling minors’ data to obtain consent from parents/guardians before processing minors’ data.
Mulla Pride Limited, a digital credit provider that operates KeCredit and Faircash mobile lending applications, was fined Sh2.98 million after the Data Protection Commissioner found them culpable of using the names and contact information of customers which were obtained from third parties to send threatening messages and phone calls.
Casa Vera Lounge restaurant located along Ngong Road in Nairobi was also fined Sh1.85 million for posting a reveler’s image on their social media platform without the subject’s consent. The ODPC said the penalty was intended to ensure that other lounges, clubs, etc. seek consent from their customers before posting their images online.
The penalty notices were issued under Sections 62 and 63 of the Data Protection Act, 2019, and Regulations 20 and 21 of the Data Protection (Complaints Handling Procedure and Enforcement) Regulations, 2021.
The ODPC also said that it was conducting a compliance audit on WhitePath, a digital credit provider, and an inspection on Naivas Supermarkets on a recent data breach. The findings of the audit and inspection will be shared with the data controllers for their swift action.
