Noordin Haji was Wednesday sworn in as the new Director-General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS). Haji took the oath of office at State House, Nairobi. President Ruto presided over the swearing-in ceremony, also attended by the CS for Interior, Prof Kithure Kindiki, among other senior government officials.
“I have full confidence that with the experience you have gathered over the years, having worked in the intelligence service for many years and in other senior government positions such as the DPP, you have assembled knowledge and experience to discharge your responsibility,” Ruto said.
President Ruto, on May 16, nominated Haji to the NIS position. He has been the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) since July 2021.
Parliament’s Defence and Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday approved Haji’s nomination, giving him the green light to be sworn in and replace Philip Kameru, who is set to retire after being at the helm of NIS since September 2014.
Haji has previously worked at the NIS as the Deputy Director of the Counter Organized Crime Unit.
On the same day Ruto also, officially appointed Kamau Thugge as the new governor of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) for the next four years.
In a Gazette notice dated June 13, 2023, President William Ruto said Dr. Thugge’s appointment takes effect on June 19.
“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 13 (1) of the Central Bank of Kenya Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint KAMAU THUGGE (DR.), to be the Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, for four (4) years, with effect from the 19th June 2023,” read the notice.
The National Assembly Finance and Planning Committee on June 6 recommended that Parliament approve Thugge’s nomination.
Dr. Thugge, a former Treasury Principal Secretary, was nominated by President Ruto on May 15 ahead of the imminent retirement of Dr. Patrick Njoroge, who has been CBK governor since June 2015.
President Ruto gifts Track Star and World Record Holder Faith Kipyegon a House and Ksh 5M
President William Ruto Tuesday announced the government will reward 1500M and 5000M World Record holder Faith Kipyegon Ksh.5 million for one record and a Ksh.6 million home for the other record.
At State House, where he hosted the champion, Ruto said Kenya would henceforth reward any Kenyan athlete who will record a stellar performance in competitions and give Ksh.5 million to all those who will break any world record.
“Going forward, we have decided as the government of Kenya that any Kenyan who participates in a world event and breaks a world record, unlike in the past where there was no recognition, going forward, for any world record broken by a Kenyan, Kenya is going to award Ksh.5 million,” said Ruto.
“And we are going to start today with Faith. She has broken two world records in 1500 meters in Italy and 5,000 meters in France. The government is going to award her a total of Ksh.5 million for one record, and we are going to give her a house worth Ksh.6 million for the other record.”
The president further committed to working closely with relevant organizations to encourage upcoming athletes to continue flying the Kenyan flag high on international podiums.
“We already have the talent, the pool of talented resources in Kenya that can break any record, and going forward, we will work hand in hand with our athletes and reward them appropriately,” he said.
Kipyegon broke two World Records in one week at the Diamond League in Florence, Italy, and Paris, France.
