State to convert Shakahola forest to a memorial site
Interior CS Kithure Kindiki Monday said the Shakahola forest will be converted into a national memorial site.
He said after the exhumation exercise; the government will call a congregation of all believers in the country and national leadership for a commemoration service.
“Once the scene of the crime is cleared, it will be taken over as a national memorial site. The government is in consultation with members of the local community to convert the place into an area of remembrance so generations to never forget there was this kind of inhumanity,” Kindiki said.
A day earlier, CS Kindiki, in a Sunday church service, had said that Mackenzie would never get out of jail.
“Mackenzie will not get out of jail; he will age in there. We pray that God gives him more years to see Kenya’s security prosper. He will not get out of jail… Mackenzie will meet the wrath of God after jail,” he said.
In response to Kindiki’s remarks, Mackenzie started a hunger strike in the cell.
“As I address your honor, some respondents have resulted on a hunger strike. The words uttered by the CS are dangerous, unlawful, and totally unwarranted,” his lawyer, Wycliff Makasembo, told the press at Shanzu court on Wednesday.
The lawyer demanded assurance that the case hearing would be fair from the chief justice, chairperson of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly, the DCI, and the Law Society of Kenya.
On Tuesday, detectives exhumed nine more bodies, increasing the death toll to 251.
Kenya closes its foreign mission in Sudan
Kenya Sunday closed its mission in Khartoum, Sudan, after reports that armed groups were now targeting diplomatic officials as infighting continued.
Principal Secretary of Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’oei said Kenya had remained open to facilitate the evacuation of any Kenyans who remained in the war-torn country.
“We continue to receive disturbing news of the targeting of diplomatic officials by armed groups in Khartoum,” Sing’oei said.
“The Kenya Mission in Khartoum, which had remained open to facilitate the evacuation of any Kenyans still in the country, is now closed,” he added.
