Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC) deadline for Civil Servants with political ambitions to resign is today, February 9, 2022.
Among those who have tendered their resignation is Walter Mongare, Director of Youth and Development in the Office of the President.
Mongare, better known as Nyambane, his Redykyulus comedy troupe stage name, where he played the character of President Daniel Arap Moi, said he has resigned and he will be making an announcement by the end of the month on the way forward.
As a youth leader, Mongare has advocated for encouraging the youth to take up leadership positions.
He told The Standard, one of Kenya’s leading newspapers, that he’s not planning to join existing parties, and he is still considering the political outfit to run under, leaving room for speculation that he’ll run as an independent candidate.
Mongare joins the race with instant name recognition and fond memories in Kenyan’s minds due to his early 2000 comedy role poking fun at the former president who was feared across the country.
Always in a jovial mood, Mongare is likely to attract the youth who are not impressed by the current line-up of career politicians, whom they blame for the corruption and problems facing Kenya.
We’ll continue to update the list of notable civil servants resigning to pursue elected office.
