Nurses at Kaiser Permanente in Fresno, Ca, will hold a candlelight vigil in honor of Sandra Oldfield, a nurse who died May 25, from COVID-19.
According to a May 27 California Nurses Association Press release, the candlelight vigil is scheduled for 8.30 P.M. at Kaiser Permanente sidewalk right in front of the hospital.
The press release blames management for Oldfield’s death saying they failed to provide her and other nurses with adequate protection at the onset of the Coronavirus outbreak, choosing instead to hoard personal protective equipment (PPE) just in case the hospital was overwhelmed by the outbreak.
“This was an unnecessary death,” Amy Arlund, a nurse at Kaiser Fresno and CNA board member said. “We told them that we didn’t know enough about this virus and wee needed to take every precaution. Instead of managers listening to nurses, they listened to weak government guidelines.”
As a result, several nurses at Kaiser Fresno got infected. To date, 120 registered nurses have died from COVID-19 according to the press release.
Oldfield, 53, fondly known as ‘Sandy’ among her peers is remembered as very friendly with an easy-going attitude and she is considered a pioneer nurse at Kaiser Fresno Medical Center.
